Mediagazer memeorandum WeSmirch. It wasn't enough. What Happens Now? A rare copy of the U. This is indeed a turning point in DAO's realizing what a incredibly dumb idea they are. Do Earth DAOs exist? But not sure this is a vindication of DAOs more than plain crowdfunding. They still had to rely on many centralized partners. The real test is what they would have done had they won. If he waited 27yrs to start Amazon, he could have used a DAO to raise that in 2hrs and own way more of the equity.
Huge win for American values here. I liked the DAO crowd better.. Meaning they didn't win. They should use nano payouts for refunds so that ETH gas fees don't screw over little guys who donated. Props to the writers on this twist. They can vote on what that is and allow multiple ideas? Maybe something gut related that helps with your constitution so the name still works?
ConstitutionDAO onboarded thousands of people into web3. Ken vs the memes is a theme. This is who I was rooting for. Whether that is for better or worse remains to be seen.
Valiant effort. At least we burned some ETH. Tweets: davidharbage , kdzwinel , mattburgess1 , duckduckgo , and duckduckgo. See also Mediagazer. Act The crowd riots in response to Paul's message. And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, "Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he is not fit to live! And they listened to him until this word : The mob that had tried to kill Paul, and had then listened intently to his whole sermon, erupted into rage over the utterance of one word.
That one word was " Gentiles. Think of it: "Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he is not fit to live! Paul had his audience all up until this point. In their minds, they didn't mind all this talk about Jesus, but they could not stand the idea that God might save Jews and Gentiles alike and in the same way. These Jews of that day did not have a problem with Gentiles becoming Jews.
But they were incredibly offended at the thought of Gentiles becoming Christians just as Jews became Christians, because it implied that Jews and Gentiles were equal, having to come to God on the same terms. Likewise, many people today are offended that "good people" must be saved the same way "sinners" are; they want a gospel that will keep them separate from the "riffraff" of society.
In Acts 22 , the Jewish mob expressed their hatred of others through violent rage; do we express our disdain of the perishing through indifference? We may not riot like the mob in this chapter did, but we may say by our inaction: "I won't give you the gospel; I don't really care if you perish in hell!
Act The commander demands an explanation of the riot. The commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said that he should be examined under scourging, so that he might know why they shouted so against him.
The commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks : It must have been a strange sight for the Roman commander. He saw Paul passionately address this huge crowd in a language he didn't know. He saw the crowd in rapt attention, until suddenly, they erupted into a riot. But when it was explained to him, he must have thought it absurd and offensive: All this rioting springing out of the hatred of Gentiles, people just like the commander himself.
Examined under scourging : It is suggested that Paul be beaten with a scourge. This was quite different from being beaten with a rod or a normal whip which Paul had experienced, 2 Corinthians Men often died or were crippled for life after a scourging.
To be examined under scourging may seem brutal, but was customary in that time - but only upon people who were not Roman citizens. Act Paul reveals his Roman citizenship. And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?
As they bound him with thongs : Paul had his hands tied with leather straps so his hands joined around a wooden pole and his back was totally exposed. He was ready for a brutal beating, one that would not stop until he had confessed to the crimes he was suspected of - but at that moment he announces his Roman citizenship Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?
Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman : When this became known, the reaction was immediate. It was a grievous wrong to even bind a Roman citizen without due process, and they had already violated Paul's rights by binding him in Acts Therefore, the commander was also afraid after he found out that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
With a large sum I obtained this citizenship : Because of all the commotion and the beating Paul had received, he probably wasn't a very impressive spectacle. Roman citizenship could not be bought for a fee, only for a bribe.
Normally, only right or reward only granted it. Paul reveals that he was born a citizen ; his parents or grandparents must have been awarded the rights of citizenship for some good done on behalf of Rome.
Paul was an extremely rare individual. It was uncommon to find such an educated, intelligent, devout Jew who was also a Roman citizen. It is the oldest known English occasional roll of arms, and contains names and blazoned shields. It has been suggested that he might have met with the Pope but there was no evidence that such a meeting ever happened.
Regardless of what his goals were in his time abroad, when Wallace returned home, he would resume his actions of aggression against the English. So hated was he by King Edward I that when it finally came time to order the death of the man, the punishment would be far more severe than most executions. William Wallace was stripped naked and dragged through the streets of London by horse. Then, he was disemboweled, stabbed, cut, and emasculated.
Then, after such torture and humiliation had been done, he was beheaded. His body was cut into several pieces and his head was stuck on a pike atop the London Bridge. Such a type of execution says a lot about a man. To his friends, Wiliam Wallace as a hero, befitting of praise and glory.
To his foes, William Wallace deserved one of the most brutal executions possible. His execution was a nightmarish affair, but his legacy in the fight for Scottish freedom would forever live on in their history. The war for Scottish Independence raged on for quite some time after that, but even the fierce fighting Wallace had taught his people, they never were able to achieve the same success.
Ultimately, the Scottish would never be truly free, something that they had fought so hard to protect. However, that William Wallace was willing to go to such lengths to win his independence has earned him hero status in our collective psyche. He has become a symbol of freedom to people all around the world, and he lives on as the epitome of a true freedom fighter. Accessed November 22, 2. Scotland achieved independence in , at the battle of bannockburn led by Robert the Bruce.
He was named king shortly after, King Robert the first. Most is true but the are some vital facts missing. You can find more if you dig deep. But there is alot on the internet that is rubbish to. I think Wallace sounds like an amazing freedom fighter and Edward sounds like a huge pompous royal ars. He deserved to die the way he did, dirty Scottish paedophile like the rest of you.
The alphabetical indexes to the registers can provide a valuable insight into the previous history and character of convicts onboard the hulks, like James Butler. So here we have the index [shows an image], from HO 96, to convicts serving on the Retribution.
And this one small snapshot reveals a real cross section of society with a potential escapee, an ex-soldier and somebody who was connected with horse stealers who previously spent time on the hulks for smuggling — a real multi-skilled recidivist.
The Act also required that the hulk overseers should submit regular returns. Initially it would appear that these returns were to be made to the treasury, but more laterally to the Home Office. And the earliest returns therefore dating back to the first two decades of the hulks are to be found in T 1. However most researchers are likely to start with the quarterly returns in HO 8.
From , hulk overseers submitted quarterly returns to the Home Secretary listing all the prisoners who were confined during the previous three months. And these records are contained within the pieces of HO 8. HO 8 returns include all the same information available in HO 9. So, the hulk number — number on the hulk I should say — the name, the age, the crime, when and where convicted and of what, and sentence and outcome details.
However, they also include information relating to the convicts behavior or conduct, which as you can see ranges from very good, good, indifferent, bad and very bad; and health, including any time spent in the hospital. And really the value is in consulting HO 9 and HO 8 together where they exist. You can build up a much fuller picture of the ancestor that you are looking for.
He was transferred to the York from the Kandahar in , and was in good health and was a very good character. Prior to , you can find information in Treasury Papers in T 1, and there are several loose bundles dating back to the very first few years of the hulks.
And these include several duplicate quarterly returns for hulks at Woolwich. As I say these are loose papers, which are kind of folded into quarters rather then registers themselves. Given the period I think these are almost certainly the Justitia and the [UNCLEAR], and the details include the name and the age, again when and where sentenced, for how long and how disposed. Of interest within these returns is the signature of the very first hulk overseer or superintendent, Duncan Campbell [shows an image].
And at the end of each return Campbell lists the total number of convicts onboard the hulks, in this case , together with the numbers in hospital, the numbers escaped, pardoned and died. And again you can see the death toll is not that great. He also typically includes at the end of each quarterly return a small number of men who he is recommending for pardon. And this conditional pardon is a theme which runs throughout the hulk registers. There are some long bundles of papers relating to hulks in T 1, including hulks in Ireland which span a much broader period from through to Although to be honest, for the most part these relate to the submission of accounts and they are not name rich information.
Similarly, within the departmental accounts of the treasury in T 38 are quarterly returns for several hulks including the Bellerophon, Captivity, Justitia, Laurel, Leviathan and Zeeland to name but a few. And these cover the period through to Of these, the Bellerophon is of particular note as it was to be distinguished some six years later when the men were removed, and it became the very first hulk used exclusively for boys.
The format of the returns in T 38 is slightly different to HO 8 and typically comprises of three parts. There is a return of convicts, a list of those in hospital and details of captains, officers and guards who were paid and victualled. There is also a column to record those discharged during the last quarter. The overseers were permitted to discharge two in every prisoners per quarter. But only the date of the discharge is recorded, not the reason.
Separate entries are also included for the number of days that convicts were hospitalised. And you can see here [shows an image] the account for the Bellerophon in March And another section records details of the officers and chaplains, surgeons, guards and supervisors who were serving onboard the hulks as well.
As I said at the beginning, several hulks were based abroad including Bermuda, from until Including the Antelope, Coromandel and the Weymouth. Despite such idyllic surroundings, the hulks at Bermuda were generally regarded as some of the worst in existence.
And conditions onboard were actually intolerable, particularly in the confined sleeping quarters at night. And unsurprisingly disease was rampant. Mortality rates were extremely high and epidemics were common, including in when convicts succumbed to yellow fever. The hulks themselves were grounded on mudbanks and infested with vermin and cockroaches.
