My critical method of closely reading the novel offers an interpretation that seeks to illuminate the author's own internal struggle with religious identity. Rushdie's hybrid religious identity composed of Islam as a given religion, on the one hand, and his life as a Muslim in Britain, on the other hand, informs my focus on the bi-religious aspect of the struggle.
However, my focus on Rushdie's novel as a display of personal struggle not only transcends the post-publication controversy surrounding The Satanic Verses; it also offers a possible reconciliation between Islam and the author himself. Discovering an additional fictitious layer within the over-arching plot of the work has assisted in revealing to the biographical critic Rushdie's own struggle.
